Charcoal Portrait of Joey and Scruffy - From Start to Finish

Charcoal Portrait of Joey and Scruffy - From Start to Finish

Little Joey and Scruffy were another commission for one of Claire's customers (at Jets Doggy Day Care). They were both quite challenging to draw but in opposite ways. Joey has a dark coat which can sometimes make getting detail across rather difficult in charcoal. The very aptly named Scruffy on the other hand is a Westie - Westies are probably one of the hardest dogs to draw in charcoal as they are white and it's therefore quite tough to get the detail in without making them look too dark! It took me around eight hours to complete this portrait which...

Charcoal Portrait of Mollie the Greyhound - From Start to Finish

Charcoal Portrait of Mollie the Greyhound - From Start to Finish

Sue asked me to draw the beautiful Mollie for her son Ollie for Christmas 2017 as she had unfortunately died very suddenly earlier in the year. I recommended using this photograph of her looking at the camera as her face is so full of character and it really makes you focus on her gorgeous eyes. I drew Mollie as a medium sized portrait sketch and she took around fifteen hours to complete. “Ollie absolutely loved the picture. A Big Hit, Thank You.” S. Winslade

Charcoal Portrait of Holly the Labrador - From Start to Finish

The portrait of Holly the yellow labrador was commissioned by Tina for her brother and sister-in-law for a joint 60th birthday present. Tina gave me a lovely picture of her on the beach and we decided that a large detailed full-body portrait would work well. See how her portrait progressed:   “I thought you would like to know my brother & sister in law were absolutely thrilled to bits with the portrait of...

Charcoal Portrait of Benjy the Border Terrier - From Start to Finish

Charcoal Portrait of Benjy the Border Terrier - From Start to Finish

I was asked to draw the gorgeous Benjy by Fiona for her mother Julia. She sent me a fantastic photograph of him with so much expression in his face so I was able to really get a lot of detail into the portrait - I drew him in 8" x 10" size. See how his portrait developed in the below video: "My daughter Fiona Gear has just given me a portrait of my terrier Benjy which you drew. I wanted to tell you that it is absolutely brilliant, you have caught his character and expression so well, I am thrilled...
