Charcoal Portrait of Bebe the Piebald Horse - From Start to Finish

Charcoal Portrait of Bebe the Piebald Horse - From Start to Finish

Bebe the Piebald horse was commissioned by Jean for her daughter Tracey. Jean wanted me to do a full-body portrait of Bebe to show off her distinctive markings and we decided that a large detailed drawing would work best. Bebe's drawing was a little bit of a challenge for me as I had to remove the rider and harness from the image and fill in the missing parts. In addition to this, the only other images Jean could get hold of (without ruining the surprise for Tracey) were of Bebe's other side which meant that I had to use a...

Charcoal Portrait of Pete the Horse - From Start to Finish

Charcoal Portrait of Pete the Horse - From Start to Finish

I drew Pete for Alison who wanted a very special gift for her bridesmaid Yulia. Watch the video below to find out more:     “Pete was a gift to a dear friend who had lost him the year before. Emma captured his details so well that when my friend opened the gift she was very emotional - the likeness to Pete was incredible, the drawing captured his unique personality and it is a gift that will be treasured for a long time, thank you so much!” A. I finished the commission off with a lovely bespoke frame with a midnight blue velvet-look mount. It took around five months to complete and whilst I was working on the commission Ruby sadly passed away so her portrait became even more special for Sue. Richard and Sue were both delighted with the finished piece and hung it...

A Fluffle of Bunnies! And Other Strange and Funny Collective Animal Names...

I found out recently that a group of rabbits or hares is sometimes referred to as a “fluffle”. How adorable is that?! It got me thinking about all the strange names we have in the English language for animal groups and where they originate from. It has been said that many of these names date back to the fifteenth century and an essay on hunting entitled ‘The Book of St Albans’, written by Juliana Berners. I think that she must have had a great sense of humour! Some of them are amusing (“A Cauldron of Bats”), some spot-on (“A...
